Abstract

Oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) is one of the main plantation commodities with high economic value in Indonesia. However, oil palm productivity is often disrupted by pest attacks, one of which is the rhinoceros beetle (Oryctes rhinoceros). This pest attacks the growing point of the plant and causes damage to immature oil palm plants. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of various ferotrap density levels on Oryctes rhinoceros populations in immature oil palm plantations at PT. Karya Makmur Bahagia Regional 1. The research was conducted using field observation methods with a descriptive quantitative approach through observations of rhinoceros beetle catches at several ferotrap density levels. Treatments consisted of 5, 6, 8, and 10 ferotrap units per block. The results showed that increasing ferotrap density increased the number of rhinoceros beetles trapped. The treatment with 10 ferotrap units per block produced the highest catches compared to other treatments. In addition, male beetles were more dominantly trapped than female beetles. The use of ferotraps with optimal density can be an effective and environmentally friendly alternative for controlling rhinoceros beetle pests in oil palm plantations.
